The 6-month rule, explained
Plaque hardens into tartar within 24-72 hours. Once tartar forms, brushing alone cannot remove it — only professional scaling can. Six months is the practical window in which most patients accumulate enough tartar to start damaging gums, but not so much that gum disease becomes irreversible. Skipping a single 6-month cleaning rarely matters; skipping three in a row almost always shows up as gingivitis or worse.
